Welcome back to Third Generation Farm! Thanks for stopping by.
It looks to be another great day for the farmers market (which has been pushed up to today, Thursday since tomorrow is the 4th of July).
The cooler weather we are having will slow down the produce which is beginning to trickle in ever so slowly. Still, here at Third Generation Farm we picked our very first tomato this week! Sadly, the rest are all sitting on the vines green, but we are seeing growth and it looks like the production will be good once they start coming off. I will bring a few green tomatoes but not many so if you want one come by early. We will have a few cabbages this week, as well as beets.

We have our very first picking of green beans! It is a small one, so you have to get here early for them!
I will also have a few sweet onions. These are excellent and much better than the sweet onions you get from the store.
I have a lot of mint that needs to be cut, so I will be drying mint this coming week. If you are interested in purchasing some dried mint in bulk please let me know. Mint is not just a flavor but also is healthy for you. Mixed with black tea and a little honey, it is a wonderfully refreshing beverage that can be enjoyed in both summer and winter. A lot of people think they don’t like mint tea because they have had the “flavored” mint tea bags from the store…Fresh mint in tea tastes nothing like those little flavored packages.
I also have one particular mint that is good for Mint Juleps. I will bring a big bundle of this today and if you plan to have family or friends over you might consider getting some of this and serving them a Mint Julep. This is a Southern tradition and a delightful beverage that is shared with close friends and family. Even if you think you don’t like mint you will probably like a Mint Julep. They can be made as an adult beverage with a shot of bourbon or as a non-alcoholic drink for the kids.

In our craft tent, my daughter has added a couple of new little girl dresses with intentions of making some more. If your daughter or granddaughter has a favorite color do not hesitate to mention it to one of us and we will try to accommodate her.
I have also made a fresh batch of Plantain Salve this week. This salve is a wonderful and everyone in our home has their own personal container. One of the crew uses it after she washes the dishes, another uses it on her lips, hubby uses it all the time on scrapes and cuts, and I use it on anything that itches—like chiggers. While it does not necessarily kill the chigger it does reduce the uncomfortable itching. I have had some customers tell me they use it on their feet for dry skin. So consider getting a container and using it regularly!
We will continue to have our Kimchi and Sauerkraut. See the page on this blog about the health benefits of fermented foods.? In a nutshell they are a natural form of probiotic and we add several strains of probiotics to ours to make it more healthful to the bowels. Fermented foods also help with digestion and can help with weight loss. Also a few spoonfuls can even soothe a tummy that is slightly upset. Good stuff-good for you!
